The SOS Band foram nomeados após a Sounds Of Santa Monica, na Lamar Regal's Room, em Atlanta.
Eles foram descobertos por Milton Lamar, o proprietário do clube, que mais tarde se tornou seu empresário.
O grupo assinou contrato com a independente Tabu Records e logo acrescentou novos membros Sonny 'Willie' Killebrew saxofone (e flauta), John Simpson mal (baixo e teclado) e Bruno Speight (guitarra).
O grupo então mudou seu nome para o S.O.S. Band.
