Cresceu cantando num coral da Igreja Batista local e, desde que começou na carreira, destacou-se por passear por entre diversos estilos, do pop às baladas, passando pelo funk. Entre seus maiores sucessos estão “Lady Marmalade”, "If You Only Knew" e "On My Own". Em 1991, com o álbum Burnin’, recebeu um Grammy de melhor performance R&B feminina.
