O grupo foi formado em East Orange, Nova Jersey, em 1986, os três membros - MCs Treach (nascido Anthony Criss) e Vinnie (nascido Vincent Brown), e DJ Kay Gee (nascido Keir Síntese) - freqüentavam a mesma alta da escola.
Inicialmente chamado de New Style, começou a se apresentar em shows de talentos e foram descobertos por Queen Latifah, alguns anos depois, ela assinou o grupo à sua sociedade de gestão e os ajudou a conseguir um acordo com a Tommy Boy Records. Naughty by estréia auto-intitulado Naughty By Nature foi lançado em 1991.
